5 Things to a Positive Online Shopping Experience

Filed under: Internet, Online Shopping — Francis Sim at 1:32 am on Thursday, August 21, 2008

Shopping can be fun, but sometimes you can’t find exactly what you’re looking for at the stores in your area, or sometimes they didn’t have your size in that one perfect item. Enter the World Wide Web. For years, the Internet has been a great place to shop, especially for those who don’t have the time to go from store to store looking for that perfect item. Below, you will find a list of things to look for when shopping online.

1. Organization and Presentation of the Site
First impressions are usually correct, and you can tell what kind of company you are dealing with the moment you take a look at their homepage. Are items easy to locate? Is the website easy to navigate? Chances are if the site is properly maintained and things are in order, you should have no problems if you decide to buy something. If the opposite is true, you may want to look somewhere else.

2. Reputation
If you plan on spending your money with someone, you want to know that they stand behind their products and services. What is their return policy? Will they be able to meet your needs in a timely fashion? If they encounter problems, how do they deal with them? If you are unsure, run a search on their company name to see what previous customers have experienced. The results may help you to make a more-informed decision.

3. Check Competitors for Price and Availability
For some, shopping is all about finding the best deal. For others, it’s about finding the right size. Make sure you explore all of your options when shopping online. Sometimes if you look for a great deal, it’s only for certain sizes. Other online retailers will match their competitors’ prices. Take a look around when you find something you like, and make sure you are getting the best deal.

4. Shipping Needs
Many online stores offer their customers free shipping. If your needs are more specific, however, look into whether or not they are able to deliver the products you need, especially when ordering internationally. Again, check out forums where customers have discussed their experiences before you buy. Sometime customs issues prevent your items from being delivered in a timely fashion, and there is nothing worse than waiting on something that you’ve already paid for to arrive.

5. Feedback and Communication
This is so important, and again you must turn to the web for other people’s impressions on the services they have received from online stores. If there is clear communication, any issues should be able to be resolved pretty quickly. If other past customers have experienced a lag in communication, however, steer clear of these businesses. It is hard to get your money back once it has been transmitted through cyberspace.

Macbook Touch Coming?

Filed under: Interesting, Internet, Technology — Francis Sim at 11:46 am on Wednesday, July 30, 2008

With Apple going to release the usual upgrades for their products this coming September, there are many rumours that the new Macbook will not be only an upgrade in specifications. Rather, it will be an overhaul with the introduction of a glass trackpad and other design changes. It is said that the new Macbook will be made out of one piece of aluminum and thinner than the current Macbook and Macbook Pro series. Most websites place the release date during the last week of September. Here’s a video but I doubt Macbook Touch is coming this soon. It will be too much of an overhaul but it’s Apple. If they managed to pull it off, I can see more people jumping onto the Mac wagon with Vista not performing that well.

The Singapore ERP Future

Filed under: Interesting, Internet, Muses — Francis Sim at 2:12 pm on Friday, July 11, 2008

My country, Singapore, has a Electronic Road Pricing (ERP) scheme that functions like a toll collection system when vehicles enter designated areas. Over the course of the past few months, we have seen the ERP rates increased and ERP gantries sprouting up here and there. The cost of building each gantry is reported at S$1.5 million, a 50% increase of the previous cost of S$1 million. The ERP scheme was implemented to supposedly regulate traffic along roads with heavy traffic and also to curb car ownership. However, I beg to differ. Here’s some images circulating around the Internet. The watermark reads ‘LemonGraphic.sg’, so kudos to the guys at LemonGraphic.sg. They dipicted the situation quite well.

Look Where You Are Going

Filed under: Interesting, Internet — Francis Sim at 11:46 pm on Sunday, April 20, 2008

When we were just kids, our mothers always told us to look where we are going. Apparently, a bus driver in Seattle did not get that message all. It doesn’t take a maths genius to know that a 12-foot tall bus will not fit into a 9-foot high tunnel and that’s what the driver tried to do on 17 April. The bus was carrying a high school softball team at that time. The accident resulted in 21 students and coaches being sent to the hospital.

The funny thing is that the bus driver tried to blame it on the GPS unit but it is common sense that a 12-foot bus definitely don’t go into a 9-foot tunnel. It is really fortunate that no one got hurt in the accident. The bus driver is only fined with a $154 fine which I think is way too little for someone who is definitely an idiot. Is he trying to tell us that he will stick to the instructions from the GPS even when there’s clearly no road in front of him? What an ass!

10 Commandments Of Marriage

Filed under: Interesting, Internet — Francis Sim at 11:47 am on Wednesday, April 9, 2008

1st Commandment

Marriages are made in heaven. But again, so are lightning and thunder.

2nd Commandment

If you want your wife to listen and pay strict attention to every word you say, talk in your sleep.

3rd Commandment

Marriage is grand, divorce is at least 100 grands!

4th Commandment

Married life is very frustrating. In the first year of marriage, the man speaks and the woman listens. In the second year, the woman speaks and the man listens. In the third year, both of them speak and the neighbours listen.

5th Commandment

When a man opens the door of his car for his wife, you are be sure of one thing: either the car or the wife is new.

6th Commandment

Marriage is when a man and a woman become as one; the trouble starts when they try to decide which one.

7th Commandment

Before marriage, a man will lie awake all night thinking about something you said. After marriage, he will fall asleep before you finish.

8th Commandment

Every man wants a wife who is beautiful, understanding, economical, and a good cook. But the law allows only one wife.

9th Commandment

Every woman wants a man who is handsome, understanding, economical, and a considerate lover. But the law allows only one husband.

10th Commandment

Man is incomplete until he marries. After that, he is finished.

Bonus Commandment

A long married couple came upon a wishing well. The wife leaned over, made a wish and threw in a penny. The husband decided to make a wish too. But he leaned over too much, fell into the well and drowned. The wife was stunned for a moment but then smiled, “It really works!”
